Genuine vintage 1980s drop-waist shirt dress in a colourful abstract geometric print, made in France.
The print mixes bright blue, turquoise, mint green, pale yellow, lilac and navy, with florals, dots, swirls and angular patchwork-style shapes. It has a wide pointed collar, short sleeves, black contrast buttons and a chest pocket with a striking black folded detail.
The bodice has a relaxed shape, leading into a low dropped waist with a full pleated skirt. It has that playful oversized 1980s look without feeling like costume wear. The fabric is confirmed as 100% polyester and has a light textured woven finish.
Labelled French size 40. Measures approximately:
20.5 inches pit to pit
41 inches around the chest
42 inches from shoulder to hem
Based on the measurements, I would recommend it for a modern UK 14, or possibly a UK 12 for a roomier fit. Please compare the measurements with a similar non-stretch dress that fits comfortably.
A fun statement dress for spring and summer, holidays, daytime events, vintage fairs or styled with trainers and a cropped jacket. It could work through cooler weather with tights, boots and a fine knit underneath.
Good vintage condition overall. There is some light bobbling to the fabric, consistent with age and previous wear, along with a few minor loose threads. Nothing that affects wearability, and the dress still presents very well.
