Clothes have always felt like more than clothes
Growing up, my mam kept a big basket filled with old clothes and pieces passed on by family and friends. My sister and I could turn ourselves into absolutely anybody.
I have been a theatre girl since I was little, and dressing up always gave me the confidence to become whoever I needed to be: Wilbur the pig, Calamity Jane, Tinkerbell or somebody entirely invented in my own head.
Clothes can change how you stand, how you move and how brave you feel.
Vintage made that feeling even stronger
Performing with my vintage vocal group, The Toodle Pips, deepened my love of clothes from another era.
I realised vintage did not need to feel like costume or something saved behind glass. It could be colourful, flattering, funny and completely wearable.
The best pieces make you feel unmistakably yourself — and sometimes brighten somebody else’s day too.
Because clothes should make ordinary days feel better
I used to spend hours searching the high street for something that felt colourful, unusual or properly me. Then vintage opened a door to clothes I did not even know existed.
There are extraordinary pieces sitting in cupboards, warehouses and bales, waiting for somebody to notice them again. Keeping beautiful clothes hidden away breaks my heart. I want them worn, enjoyed and given another chapter.
Jolly means joy, silliness, colour and fun. And it is a club because I want this to become a community of people who genuinely love clothes and the stories they carry.
The Jolly belief
Clothes should not wait for a special occasion.
Wear the colour. Choose the brilliant print. Let Tuesday have the ridiculous sleeve.
